Gypsy Strings At Strathmore Hall

You have not heard everything music has to offer until you have heard a condensed version of Rimsky-Korsakov's "Scheherazade" arranged for electric violin, double bass, guitar and accordion. That was one of the short, colorful items offered by a quartet called Gypsy Strings Thursday evening at Strathmore Hall. It was done quite well, but the wonder was to see it done at all.
The group's eclectic combination of instruments gives it a special affinity to klezmer music, French musette melodies, Russian folk songs, the great tangos of Astor Piazzola and the Schrammelmusik of Vienna's cafes, all of which were represented in bright, energetic performances. But with some arranging, the group seems ready to tackle most classical music this side of Bartok's string quartets. The results, in a movement from Rodrigo's "Concierto de Aranjuez," soundtrack music by Dmitri Shostakovich and Nino Rota, and the "Radetzky" March, didn't sound like the original orchestrations, but they sounded good.
What about Gypsy music? Just when one began wondering whether the group's name should be Eclectic Strings Plus Accordion, it showed its Gypsy credentials with Brahms's Hungarian Dance No. 5, a czardas by Vittorio Monti and the klezmer tune "Alter Tsigayner" ("Old Gypsy"). They sounded like they were born for this music.
